The Philadelphia Chapter has enjoyed a 17-year partnership with Stenton Family Manor, a transitional housing program that provides shelter and services to up to 250 women, men children and families. Chapter members donate items such as soap, pajamas, deodorant, sheets and towels to address the residents’ most urgent needs, and deliver items to Stenton Family Manor each month.
At Philadelphia Girl Friend Dorothy Townes’ suggestion, the group decided to meet annually in the various cities to help nurture the evolving relationships. “The Philadelphia Girl Friends hosted the first conclave,” Girl Friend Eunice wrote in the 1947 edition of Chatterbox, the organization’s official magazine. Girl Friend Dorothy Townes also suggested that The Girl Friends become a national organization, and under the legal guidance of Baltimore Boyfriend Thurgood Marshall, The Girl Friends was incorporated in 1938.
